Words as Medicine: The Healing Power of Storytelling
How often do we pause to think about the healing power of our words?
To give life to our inner world by sharing our experiences—whether with ourselves or with another.
A curandera. A healer. A therapist. Your loved one or trusted friend. A stranger. A journal.
Any way that allows you, the storyteller, to release your words, your story.
The magic of story
Story is a big part of the healing I offer. I guide and support others in alchemizing the stories they’ve told themselves into truth—truth that sometimes looks entirely different from the stories they walked in with.
There’s magic in that.
Magic in creating story from physical pain, numbness, and disconnection.
Magic in unraveling half-truths and distorted chapters into clarity and knowing.
Magic in finding language for what your body and soul have been trying to tell you all along.
This is the medicine of words and story.
Stories that heal
We all long to see ourselves reflected in the stories we read and hear. To not feel alone. To feel understood. To feel seen.
But vulnerability, shame, fear, and perfectionism often prevent us from sharing our own stories, even as we seek out stories that mirror ours.
Sitting together to share our truths. Writing in our journals. Reading someone else’s story. These acts can help us make sense of our experiences—our why’s.
What gem might you find in your own story? What might become clearer through the lens of someone else’s?
The medicine of authentic stories
Stories bring emotion to life. They bring the body to life.
Through storytelling, we (re)story the body, the heart, and the soul. [Read Breaking Open: Healing Myself for deeper insights into reconnecting with oneself.]
These are stories of vulnerability, shame, heartbreak, love, friendship, curiosity, playfulness, and, most of all, authenticity. [Read Holding All We Grieve to further explore emotional healing.]
They guide us, teach us, and remind us how to be. This is the medicine.
Reflection prompt
What story is your body or soul longing to tell?
Take a few moments to reflect or journal:
What emotions or memories feel ready to surface?
If you could share your story with anyone—your journal, a trusted friend, or even yourself—what would you say?
If you feel called to explore the stories within you, somatic coaching or therapy can help. Together, we can unravel the narratives holding you back and rediscover the clarity and truth your heart and body have been longing to express. Learn more about somatic coaching here.
